What a school’s viewbook won’t tell you, read straight from its federal filings: nine years of verified IRS Form 990 financials, the local market, a same-size peer view, and five interview-ready questions drawn from the school’s own numbers — one report per school, for whoever needs to read it from the outside before a decision turns on it.

FOR THE SEARCH FIRM

Brief a finalist. Diligence a client.

A national search firm or a boutique practice, same two jobs: hand a finalist a structured read before the campus visit, or size up a prospective client school before you pitch. One team license, ten seats, and the right to share the report with the candidates you place.

FOR THE SITTING HEAD

Your school, next to its peers.

Benchmark your own school against the same-size, same-region peers your board names every meeting — operating margin, tuition dependency, reserves — and read a peer school’s filings before it comes up. The same public numbers a trustee or consultant would pull to size up a school, joined into one report.

Filed, not surveyed. Every financial metric comes from federally filed IRS Form 990s — the same public disclosures the IRS publishes, with identical methodology for every school.

THE SHARED READ

Everyone in a search is on someone’s side. The filings aren’t.

The search consultant, the sitting Head, the board chair are all excellent at what they do, and each is working for someone. The IRS Form 990 isn’t — it’s the same public record for every school, filed the same way. HiveCheck joins nine years of it into one honest read that each seat at the table can use from where it sits: a candidate deciding whether to take the job, a firm briefing a finalist, a Head sizing up a peer.

Same numbers, read from wherever you sit.

WHAT YOU GET

Ten panels. One school. The whole picture.

Four of them at a glance below. The full report also covers paying capacity, fundraising profile, competitive landscape, enrollment demand, leadership pay & governance, and five interview-ready questions on the school’s own numbers.

PANEL 01

Financial Health

Nine years of IRS 990: revenue, expenses, endowment, operating margin, comp ratio, tuition dependency.

PANEL 02

Peer Comparison

Same-size, same-region peers. Percentile per metric. Recut the cohort inside the report.

PANEL 03

Community

The area around the school: population trend, household income, K-12 cohort size, education attainment.

PANEL 04

Local Economy

State labor market: the unemployment rate and the year-over-year employment trend.

Plus the questions. Every report closes with five interview-ready questions, generated from that school’s own 990 filings — on sustainability, leadership pay, governance, and where the school is heading, each anchored to a specific number so you walk in having read the school, not skimmed it.

WHO IT’S FOR

The people in the room.

HiveCheck is for everyone on either side of a headship search — sitting Heads and aspirants, trustees, and the search firms who place them. Everyone in a search is on someone’s side. The filings aren’t.

HOW IT WORKS

Three steps. Then walk into the visit prepared.

01

Pick the school.

Search the 1,620-school coverage set, or browse by state. Free preview shows you the school identity and a peer snapshot.

02

Read the report.

Ten panels: Financial Health, Peer Comparison, Community, Paying Capacity, Fundraising, Competition, Demand, Local Economy, Leadership & Governance, and the five questions to ask. Every number sourced. Fiscal year on every panel.

03

Walk in prepared.

Five interview-ready questions, drawn from the school's own filings, that show you've done the work. Numbers in your back pocket. A year of access if you want to re-read.

WHERE THE DATA COMES FROM

A note on the data.

The 1,620 schools in HiveCheck are independent K–12 institutions in the United States with verified IRS Form 990 filings. We pull nine years of filings (tax years 2016–2024), one to three years after each filing year due to the IRS publication lag.

Community demographics and local economy data layer onto every school using the U.S. Census American Community Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Both are public datasets, refreshed annually for ACS and monthly for BLS. This isn’t proprietary data; it’s the work of joining the right public sources to the right question.

Financial-health metrics use the Composite Financial Index — a single 0–10 measure of a school’s overall financial health — from the standard framework published by NACUBO, the association of college and university business officers.

THE FIRM ADVANTAGE

Your candidate walks in ready. You’re the reason.

Hand every finalist a structured brief — the school’s finances, market, and same-size peers on one page — before the campus visit. They walk in prepared, and your firm is the reason why.

Reports may be shared with candidates you advise under the organizational license. They may not be republished, resold, or used to build derivative data products. Full terms.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

What you might wonder.

What schools do you cover?

1,620 U.S. independent schools with verified IRS Form 990 financial data. We focus on schools where we can deliver the full report: financials, area context, peer comparison, rather than partial coverage on a larger list.

How fresh is the data?

Coverage runs through FY2024 for most schools, with newer filings rolling in as the IRS publishes them. The IRS releases 990 data on a one-to-two-year lag. Every report shows the through-year prominently.

Is this a subscription?

Yes — an annual subscription. $250 a year, or $100 the first year for the founding 100. Cancel anytime from your account; you keep access through the period you have paid for.

Where does the data come from?

IRS Form 990 (public-domain federal disclosures), U.S. Census Bureau ACS, and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. No scraped sources. No student, parent, or employee data.

I'm not a candidate. Is this for me?

Yes. Search firms brief the finalists they place off it. Trustees and consultants use it to size up a school from the outside. Sitting Heads benchmark before board conversations, and aspirants build a long-arc view of the schools they'd want to lead. Same report, same year, same price.

What are the interview questions?

Every report closes with five questions to ask the search committee, generated from anomalies in that school's own 990 filings and each anchored to a specific number. They're seeds, not a script — the point is to show you've read the school closely, not to interrogate anyone.

Can I see what the report looks like before paying?

Yes. Every school has a free preview — school identity, the latest revenue and expense line, and one peer chart. The full paid report is one click from there.

Refunds?

No — HiveCheck is a digital information product and access isn't refundable once granted. Preview any school and try the free demo before you subscribe, and cancel auto-renewal any time for the next term. Duplicate charges and billing errors are refunded — email contact@hivecheck.ai.

What about my school's website data or marketing claims?

We don’t scrape marketing material. We pull from federal disclosures because that’s what holds up in a search. A glossy viewbook isn’t evidence — a Form 990 is.
